Hmmm, it's like I never visited to organise. Hugh's not having any of it and wants us up stairs. I protest that Lucy, Events said we could be downstairs - even if we do clog up stairwell and create havoc with health and safety. She also said, I quip, that the book would be in the windows a week before AND afterwards. This doesn't go down well. Apparently 'she's not a manager and shouldn't have said that.' It's head office this and that and Hugh goes upstairs and we set up unaided. The downstairs team prove very helpful and change the current time advertised - to the correct one. With 800 new books published on October 1st the shop is stuffed to the gunnels with 'must reads', ours is not amongst them. Instead they remain in the box they arrived in and the posters are in a cupboard. We address the situation, piling the one table we have access to with the book. We get chairs and although it feels all terribly unlikely in these circumstances, a crowd gathers. It includes a cynic we found lurking in the map section who kindly stays to listen. There are some familiar faces, but not the ones I'd been expecting. Just as we conclude the event, my dear friends appear at the door.

A vast expanse of books, Starbucks & Paperchase awaits us. Our book and a poster has made the window - next to an enormous poster of Dan Brown's latest bestseller with the biggest print run of all time. Still, I'm proud to be sharing his space - however short lived. Carole Ann and I have coffee and I arrange free pain au chocolats. Upstairs, Starbucks is busy but our delegated area is not. We attempt to rally some interest. With minutes to go two friends arrive and I'm delighted. With people on the front row a few others sit down - some lurk in the shadows behind bookshelves. It's not our best attendance, but I feel a do a better talk. The audience approach us afterwards and are an interesting mix of people with various motivations for joining us.

The place is bustling and it's only 10.30am. The set up is a bit of a scramble, there's no lift and the shop is busy with customers. Still, the place is deserted again five minutes before our talk. Carole Ann's family and friends are local and start to filter in. A crowd begins to build. Again Dan Brown's publicity fills the window - and our book is squeezed in next to him. Again people are interesting and make it all worth while asking questions and sharing their situations. We have fun, sign books, take questions and hand out the croissants. A really rewarding morning.

The branch is deserted when I arrive - upstairs and downstairs. It looks likely co-author Carole Ann and myself will spend the morning talking to each other. Lara, the events co-ordinator is very encouraging when I see her. 'Sarah' she says, 'your book is selling really well!'. 'Is it?' I reply. Apparently she keeps selling out. This could be prevented if they ordered more than five books at a time, but it's still great news. As I arrange the free croissants, we decide to settle by the doorway so we can lure anyone in sight to the empty chairs. We have ten people - all are interesting. A mix of those trying to change jobs and some who have their dream job - but don't have enough work doing it.
